VeriScan: Barcode Validation & Verification
Many food and retail manufacturers are being fined by large retail groups for faults and errors found in product barcode labelling. Often the errors are very simple and stem from product and packaging mismatches or incorrectly printed barcodes on packaging.
With such problems in mind, Barcode-IT have developed VeriScan, an end of line barcode validation and verification solution, which provides a safety net to help busy production staff manage the changeover from packaging one product to another. This ensures that the barcodes on the item being packed match the product barcode required by the customer.
Take Preventative Action!
Sending incorrect products in the right packaging or the correct products in the wrong packaging, can result in serious fines from the major retail groups, such as Tesco, Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer, Asda, Morrisons, etc. If one product is incorrectly labelled then the entire pallet can be rejected and if one product on multiple pallets is incorrectly labelled, the entire shipment can be rejected! As fines are determined per individual product returned, you can just imagine to costs incurred even if the fine is as little of £0.30 per product!
Dealing with incorrectly labelled goods costs these companies money, time and logistical headaches. So they pass the pain back up the supply chain, in an attempt to get manufacturers to implement systems that ensure that goods are correctly labelled and barcode identified. Often the first time that these major retailers see that goods are not correctly identified is during Goods Inwards, Quality Control or in the worst case at the check-out.
Some examples of problems solved by VeriScan include:
- The packaging is correct but the barcode has been printed incorrectly by the printing company
- A similar product was being pack previously and the packaging change was overlooked
- The same product is being packaged for more than one customer and the packaging change or barcode labelling. change has been overlooked
- The packaging has run out halfway through an order and the operator has loaded the wrong packaging

How VeriScan works
- During product line set-up, the production supervisor refers to a customer product manual or barcoded works order documentation.
- The manual contains all the steps needed to set up the production line, including visual identification of the product, a picture of the correct label or packaging and an authenticated copy of the barcode for the product.
- At the end of the production line, a fixed position barcode scanner is triggered to scan for a barcode when the packaged item passes beneath.
- At the end of the set-up process, the barcode scanner is "shown" the correct barcode and learns this code (remembering it until it is reset).
- All barcodes on the labels or packaging are then verified against the "learned" code and the control unit can then take action if there is no code or the barcode read does NOT match the previously read code.
