MCL - The Intelligent Solution
Many products in the Datamax Printer range are now being supplied with an embedded MCL client runtime module which allows the printer to act as the application host instead of relying on an additional host like a PC. MCL is short for Macro Command Language and this recent adaptation could revolutionise printing in manufacturing and warehouse environments.
Have you ever wanted to do any of the following in your work environment:
- Receive data directly from a secondary device like a barcode scanner, keyboard or weighing scale?
- Process data and manipulate label format variables independently?
- Interact with your host database or ERP system?
- Read and write data to and from a printer-resident look-up table?

Well now you can with an MCL enabled printer from Datamax. These "intelligent printers" have an MCL client runtime module embedded into them and can therefore act as the standalone application host, receiving and sending real-time data. This function enables the printer to process and validate received data and then perform various functions on the data, such as updating a remote database, prompting an operator to input additional data via a keyboard or simply print barcode labels.
MCL enabled printers are compatible with a variety of ERP systems including SAP or BaaN, and databases (Oracle, ACT, Access, Excel or any other Microsoft ODBC compliant database) making connection effortless. Applications can easily be designed and information can be stored by the printer for large batch printing jobs.
Entry level MCL enabled printers include the Datamax I-4210 and the Datamax M-4208 but the software can be put into a variety of other Datamax printers in the A-Class, M-Class, I-Class and W-Class ranges.

Applications
An MCL enabled printer is often preferable where it is not desirable or practical to have a personal computer (PC). Typical applications for Datamax MCL enabled printers are:
- Scan and Print Applications
- Compliance labelling
- Shipping and Receiving
- Product Identification
- Asset Tracking
- Inventory Control
- High Resolution Labelling
All these applications can of course be carried out using a printer attached to a host system, so why is an MCL enabled printer preferable to this method?
- Efficiencies gained through using one machine for multiple tasks, not only in cost but time saving too, why have 2 machines when you could have the one?
- No security issues associated with having a PC in a manufacturing or warehouse environment. Datamax printers are very rugged, PCs tend not to be.
- Reduces need for PC maintenance, upkeep and training.
- No PC hardware failure, no PC viruses and no employees playing PC games or surfing the Internet!
