Success stories - Aerovac
As Europe's leading specialist supplier of composite process materials and reusable vacuum bagging systems, Aerovac Systems has helped to shape the future of the aerospace, motor racing, marine, electronics and wind energy industries for over 20 years. Aerovac came to Barcode-IT looking for a real-time data capture system for their warehouse to help with stock picking and stock monitoring.
Kai Arter, Managing Director at Aerovac Systems Limited says, "With the real-time information, we are able to respond to our customers far more quickly. We are able to process orders much faster because we know the location of every item in the warehouse, whereas previously we often had to search for products which delayed the processing of the order. Sales order processing has been dramatically speeded up."
Application Overview
Four years ago, Aerovac Systems, installed an integrated software suite from Navision operating on a Microsoft SQL database. A major requirement was to have tight control of inventory using barcode technology.
"Every single product we have has a barcode label on it, which is generated when the goods are received and booked into stock," says Kai Arter.
He continues, "Our warehouse has locations which are also barcoded. This means that when we take a sales order, the stock to be picked is allocated in the sales office and the warehouse staff receive a list of the products to be picked, together with batch numbers and locations. They scan the picking sheet and the portable terminal tells them where the material is. They then go and scan the material which is then picked, ready for shipping".
The fully integrated real-time barcode driven inventory system had to integrate directly with the Navision database running on Microsoft SQL. The system was developed in conjunction with Barcode-IT who recommended and supplied PSC portable radio data terminals together with Optygate, which is ODBC compliant transaction development and integration software. Optygate provides the real-time connection between the PSC Radio Data Terminals and Navision. The Navision reseller, Airedale Systems, used the Optygate software to develop the front-end transactions, supported by Barcode-IT, who are the UK partner for Optygate software solutions.
All the equipment is radio frequency based, so Aerovac have RangeLan 2 Ethernet Access Points (aerials) in the ceiling of the warehouse. As everything is real-time, Aerovac can see at any time the exact stock position in the warehouse and what is available to sell.
How it started
Aerovac came to Barcode-IT in early 1999 looking for general information on barcoding. In 2000 the company decided to implement a Radio Frequency (RF) Data Capture system to control inventory, so that stock checks could be done quickly and products could be located efficiently in as little time possible.
