Success Stories - Dexion
Being a world leader in warehouse storage solutions, it is important to have a fast and efficient warehouse of your own. So when Dexion moved their operation to a new UK warehouse in Swindon, improving efficiency within the warehouse was a key consideration. With this in mind the management team contacted Barcode-IT, who offered their Dexterity Warehouse Management Solution to enhance Dexion's Sage 200 system.
The Dexion management team recognised that a new warehouse, with a new workforce and a new warehouse management system would produce challenges, especially as they were working to a very tight timescale. But working closely together, the Dexion and Barcode-IT development teams, were able to hit the very tight targets required and the Dexterity WMS for Sage 200 was delivered on spec and on time.

“We chose Dexterity WMS from Barcode-IT primarily because of its very close integration with Sage 200. However, in addition to the software, we have been very impressed with the completion of the project by Barcode-IT within our very demanding timescale.” says Eric Wood-Thompson, Warehouse Manager at Dexion.
Once the Dexterity WMS was installed in March 2010, previous problems in the warehouse of incorrect picking, poor stock accuracy and customer complaints, rapidly diminished. Now, around 12 months after "going live", the stock value accuracy is 99.7% on over 1200 stocked items and picking speed in the busy warehouse has dramatically improved, with warehouse related complaints steadily falling throughout 2010.
Application Overview
Dexterity WMS is fully integrated with Sage 200, with sales orders being passed to Dexterity in real-time. Dexterity manages all aspects of the warehouse using WiFi connected mobile terminals and printers, whilst at the same time keeping close connectivity to Sage 200. Workers are directed to putaway and picking locations automatically, with complex customer specific rules guiding the operator at every stage of the work flow.
An important requirement of the new warehouse management system at Dexion, was the ability to handle Back To Back orders. As customer specific modules can be added to Dexterity WMS, this was easily included into the specifications of the project. Back to Back orders occur when sales orders require stock to be ordered specifically to fulfil that customer order. When the product arrives, the delivery note is matched to the waiting sales order and marked with a label ready for dispatch. This means that the item cannot be picked for any subsequent orders. The Dexterity WMS system for Dexion uses different types of mobile hardware to facilitate the running of the warehouse management software. Dexion use 8 Dex S1 Mobile Terminals, 5 Zebra QL420 mobile printers and 2 Datamax M-Class barcode label printers within the Swindon warehouse, to send information back to the Dexterity system and label goods within the warehouse.
How it started
Dexion contacted Barcode-IT after receiving an invitation to a Barcode-IT Roadshow in 2008. Following the implementation of their Sage 200 solution and visits and presentations from our Sage Consultant, Jim Southern, Dexion placed an order for the Dexterity WMS in November 2009.
