Success Stories - Glen Dimplex

Glen Dimplex Home Appliances came to Barcode-IT in 2005, when they began implementing plans to consolidate their warehousing facilities from three sites into one new National Distribution Centre. The £21 million purpose built warehouse was required to be fully barcode automated to enable goods-in, shipping, putaway and picking of stock to be as efficient as possible.

GDHA runs IBM AS400 and planned to use a customised WMS software solution at the centre of the system. To ensure maximum flexibility, Glen Dimplex required hardware that was reliable and future proof, giving the software designers the ability to plan for the next generation of WMS applications.

Since implementing the automated system Jonathan Colley, Head of IT at Glen Dimplex, has seen many improvements in efficiency & reliability. He is now keen to explore new technologies and is currently looking into RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) with Barcode-IT, to ensure the company remains at the forefront of cutting edge logistics technology.

How it started

Glen Dimplex Home Appliances originally found Barcode-IT through a search on the internet.

“After doing significant research into the solutions available to us from various potential suppliers, we decided to use Barcode-IT due to their friendly support, unpressured approach and flexibility when testing equipment and changing parts of the specification.” continues Jonathan Colley, Head of IT at Glen Dimplex.

Application Overview

The warehouse at Glen Dimplex has two different storage location types; high bay racking and stacked product location areas. Floor set barcodes mark each floor location, while racking labels mark each section of the high bay racking.

Trux computers allow the forklift operator to access the main system effortlessly, with pick lists displayed on the large touch screen, fitted at eye level for ease of use. Barcode-IT chose Trux computers for GDHA, for their ability to adapt to changing technology and future updates to the project. Glen Dimplex aim for continuous improvement and therefore require equipment that can change along with their needs. Trux WAP computers have all the functionality of a normal PC and could therefore be programmed to fit the exact specifications of their project.

A Symbol LS3408 barcode scanner is also connected to each Trux terminal, to enable racking labels, floor locations and product labels to be scanned into the system. Barcode-IT recommended this dual diode barcode scanner to allow barcodes to be read from distance and close to.  This allows the location barcodes and the product barcodes (quite small) to be read with the same scanner.
