Hitachi orders Train Maintenance System from Barcode-IT

Barcode-IT have been selected to supply a maintenance parts management system in conjunction with Nexala to support the maintenance of the new 29 strong fleet of Hitachi Electric Trains being commissioned for the high speed link service from Ashford in Kent to St Pancras station, London. Hitachi, one of the world’s largest train manufacturers, will use the Barcode-IT data capture solution to front-end Nexala’s Equinox Asset and Maintenance Management System, allowing inspectors and maintenance workers to use mobile terminals throughout the new maintenance and repair facility.

“We chose Barcode-IT because of their ability to supply the complete barcoding solution tailor made to our exacting requirements.  Their professional and can do attitude have attributed to this projects success.” - says John Robertson, Hitachi Rail Maintenance (UK) Ltd.

The Barcode-IT solution comprises Datalogic Mobile Falcon 4423 WiFi terminals for the mobile workers, Datalogic PowerScan 7000 industrial barcode scanners for the static locations and uses NiceLabel Suite v5 coupled with Datamax M-Class printers to provide barcode label printing functions.

The interface to Equinox has been custom written by Barcode-IT and provides a mobile interface for workers to control all aspects of the inspection and maintenance procedures. This includes the initial identification of locations requiring maintenance, the booking out of required parts and the scheduling of planned maintenance. The mobile workers will have complete access to the Equinox system, which will improve operational efficiency and optimise maintenance schedules.

In addition Barcode-IT will be providing custom identification products, to be applied to all parts and maintainable items throughout the train. This comprises over 2500 per carriage and these barcodes are used by the mobile system to identify parts and locations quickly and accurately. Consumable labels for the stores will be produced using three Datamax M-4208 thermal printers controlled by NiceLabel Suite v5 software, which automatically produces labels using a link to Equinox.

The Barcode-IT integration of mobile terminals into Equinox will play a key role in Hitachi’s maintenance operations.
