Success Stories - Presspart Manufacturing
When Presspart chose SAP as their ERP system in 2009 after their old system became unreliable, their SAP implementor recommended Barcode-IT for advice on an industrial WiFi infrastructure. Following recommendations and surveys, Barcode-IT supplied a wireless solution to feedback real-time information to SAP and replace Presspart's ageing Radio Frequency equipment.

Presspart specialise in high precision, metal and plastic components for the pharmaceutical industry and industrial markets. Primary production is of deep-drawn metal canisters for the inside of inhalers and plastic actuators that house the canister. They also manufacture metal refills for high quality pens and components for the water pump industry. In such a high production industry, tracking components through production and fulfilling customer orders efficiently and to the highest quality is paramount.
"Using our CS3 system and RF terminals, the system used to fall over regularly and the scanners dropped out of range constantly. With the new SAP integrated wireless solution, our operators can roam anywhere in the factory without a problem." says Duncan Briggs, IT Manager at Presspart. "The speed at which tasks are completed has increased dramatically and errors have been greatly reduced, which is very important to us in our quality driven industry."
The SAP and wireless equipment implementation at Presspart was very successful, so much so that Presspart were nominated for and won the Bronze Award for Implementation in the Small & Midsize Enterprise Implementation Category from SAP in 2009.
Application Overview
Barcode-IT recommended the Datalogic Kyman mobile computer for the project and completed a full radio site survey of the building and produced a report to advise the correct number of Cisco access points required to give full WiFi coverage throughout the production and warehouse areas.

Presspart now use 10 Datalogic Kyman mobile computers, which use wireless 802.11b/g technology to communicate real-time data from the factory back to SAP. The Kyman terminals are used primarily for order picking and despatch. The Datalogic Kyman is highly suited to a warehouse environment, as it is rugged and has auto ranging scanning capabilities so it is able to read both small and large barcodes, either near or far away.
To produce identification labels for products to be tracked throughout the factory, 15 Zebra ZM400 thermal printers with ZebraNet were supplied. The ZebraNet allows the printers to be linked directly into the wireless network and operators can send information to any Zebra printer within the company via the wireless network. This gives fantastic flexibility especially in the case of printer failure, as prints can simply be redirected to another printer. At the same location of the Zebra printers are CipherLab 1000 CCD handheld scanners, attached to PC workstations. These cost effective scanners are used to scan information from production notes into the PC, so that accurate despatch labels can be put onto each product.
Since go-live Presspart have experienced few issues with the hardware , but any issues were managed by the Barcode-IT technical team, who provided quick and efficient solutions, using their in house customer care system.
"Any repairs that have been done, have been dealt with quickly and with minimum effort on our part." continues Duncan Briggs, IT Manager. "If we have a problem with any of the equipment, we know we can call Barcode-IT and their technical staff will give us the benefit of their extensive knowledge."
How it started
Presspart Manufacturing were introduced to Barcode-IT via their SAP integration team, itelligence [more], back in February 2009. Presspart required a company to provide the wireless infrastructure for their manufacturing plant and having worked with them previously on similar projects, their SAP integrator recommended Barcode-IT. Presspart chose Barcode-IT as their partner due to both their experience in wireless networks and their proximity in location to Presspart, which was a very important factor to Presspart for support purposes going forward.
