Salton Europe
Currently in the middle of a 5 year expansion plan, Salton Europe are centralising their distribution operations in the UK. Previously running multiple warehouses, Salton wanted to amalgamate distribution into a single site, at Wombourne near Wolverhampton. Merging their operations into a single distribution centre required a sophisticated ERP system and Salton selected SAP with the WM (Warehouse Management) module which supports "live" radio frequency (RF) terminals.
"We chose Barcode-IT because of their proven track record with SAP RF installations at Macaw and Halewood International. The system was affordable and the equipment they recommended was an industry standard and we had heard good things about it" says Tim Gardener, Business Analyst at Salton Europe.

The Salton WMS operated effectively throughout the 2004 peak period between September and December when Salton needed it most. Pick accuracy has been improved and the speed with which goods are located and dispatched has increased. Human error has also been significantly reduced as data no longer needs to be input by hand and operations can easily be monitored so that if things do go wrong the source can be identified.
Application Overview

The Salton project was unusual in the fact that the specifications for the RF (Radio Frequency) system had to be done before the warehouse was actually built. When the project was given the green light in 2003 much of the planning had already been done. Barcode-IT provided Salton with 17 Intermec T2475A truck mounted terminals with Sabre barcode scanners, 14 Intermec T2435 RF hand held terminals and configured the 19 Cisco 1200 access points in June 2004.
Tim Gardener continues, "The real test of the WMS will be when the centralisation of stock is complete in mid-2005 and the Wombourne warehouse is responsible for all distribution. We are confident that the system and equipment will continue to work well and help improve the productivity of our warehouse into the future."
How it started
It was actually Pifco who contacted Barcode-IT after a site visit to Macaw Soft Drinks Ltd. in 2000 to see their SAP warehouse in operation. Barcode-IT had provided the hardware for this project and were recommended to Pifco by the IT manager at Macaw. After Pifco were taken over by Salton Europe in 2001 the project was put on hold until 2003. A second visit to see the SAP RF installation at Halewood International in March 2004, proved to the Operations Director, Roy White, that the project could function as anticipated and the system was given budget to go ahead.
